Online Racing Games

Pick up your racing game!

Racing video games is the genre, where the player participates in a racing competition of any sort, with any kind of vehicle - air, land, space, or water one. The settings might as well simulate the real racing contests or create their own. If you ever watched Formula 1 competition, you basically have an idea of what the racing game is.

The first video racing game, Gran Trak 10, was published by an American video game developer Atari in 1974. The player is challenged with driving the car along the race track, trying to pass as many checkpoints as possible within the time limit. The graphics of the game were extremely limited, with only two main colors - black, representing background, and white - walls. Gran Trak 10 is considered to be the first car racing video game and the first game to use a steering wheel, though another racing game, Wipeout, was released in 1972 for a home video game console.

There’re few subgenres of the racing video games:

Open-world racing game

Open racing games imply that the player can simply drive through and explore whole cities and towns across the country. These kinda games are quite tricky, as in the open-world genre, it is definitely hard to keep the player interested, especially when it comes to wondering around at high speed. The maps, acting as one huge track, need to be engaging and detailed. One of the best and few examples of a good quality open-world racing game is Forza Horizon 4.

Bike racing games

As it comes from its name, bike racing games require the player to ride a motorbike along the track. You might be challenged with performing tricks, completing the track in a limited amount of time, or simply competing with others. Highway Rider or Death Moto are good choices here.

N64 racing games

N64 racing games refer to the Nintendo 64 home video game console. Nintendo 64 first came out in 1996, and its library currently has some of the best retro racing games. Some of the good N64 games include Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, and Wipeout 64. Nintendo 64 uses the ROM cartridge system, but, fortunately, you can easily download an online emulator to play all these games.

3D racing games

3D or three-dimensional video games let the player experience the gameplay from three dimensions: height, width, and depth. Unlike 2D games, where all the objects are only viewed from the perspective of their height and width, 3D versions provide the player with a more realistic representation. If you want to check this kind of games out, you could start with City Racing 3D or Turbo Racing 3D.

VR racing games

VR or virtual reality racing games are kind of 3D games but way better! VR software (headsets, such as Samsung VR, Play Station VR, etc.) presents the game in such a way that it makes the player believe, the environment on the screen is real. A good example of a VR racing game is Project CARS or Grand Turismo Sport.

NASCAR racing games

National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing or NASCAR is an auto-racing company that runs over 1500 races a year across the USA, Canada, and Europe. The company has worked with several game developers and published more than 40 racing video games. The first one of the NASCAR racing series came out in 1994 and became a huge success thanks to its accurate physics and sophisticated design. Some of the best NASCAR racing games are Days of Thunder: Arcade, NASCAR Rumple, and NASCAR Heat.

Horse racing games

If you are horse racing competitions lover or just wanna “experience” riding the horse without actually riding it, you can opt for horse racing video games. Don’t worry, there are more than plenty! For starters, you could check out the Gallop Racer series or G1 Jockey.

Well, that covers most of it! There’re dozens of racing games to choose from, and if you are a real competitor, they are just right for you!
